Use of movies/clips
Try to use your learner’s interest as well as authentic material. If the student is upper intermediate, a TED talk or an instructive video (5-10min. duration max) on YouTube can do wonders. The structure in this case would be ; introduction; 3-5 new words explained; start the video; short breaks with questions to check the understanding; critical thinking about the topic at the end; finally, ask the student for a feedback.
It’s also possible to find songs to complete on a sheet while listening.
